ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Restaurant owners are sending out an SOS to Orange County diners: Keep us in mind, and order takeout and delivery meals from your local establishments.

With health officials’ mandates restricting in-house dining, coupled with bar and winery closings, to combat the spread of the new coronavirus, many local eateries are struggling and are turning to takeout and delivery — some for the first time — to stay in business.

“We are dying, unless we get help somehow,” said Chef Paul Cao, owner of Irvine’s Burnt Crumbs, which has turned to takeout and delivery, along with its sister eatery Burntzilla in Irvine. Both locales were forced to lay off workers. The Huntington Beach Burntzilla is shuttered for now.

“We spent two hours calling each and every employee individually. We apologized to them. We told them we were so very sorry that we failed them as owners,” said Phi Nguyen, Burntzilla chef-owner. “We feel like our employees trust us with their livelihood and give us their all and we just, we really tried. We tried everything, are continuing to try everything … ”

In a first for Marché Moderne, a Newport Beach French bistro run by husband-and-wife chef duo Florent and Amelia Marneau, is a takeout option. Patrons can select from a rotating menu, with gloved servers delivering orders to vehicles. Chef Florent is trying to keep his staff on the payroll — a team of more than 60, some of whom worked there for nearly two decades, a spokesperson said.
