ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Restaurant owners are sending out an SOS to Orange County diners: Keep us in mind, and order takeout and delivery meals from your local establishments.
With health officials’ mandates restricting in-house dining, coupled with bar and winery closings, to combat the spread of the new coronavirus, many local eateries are struggling and are turning to takeout and delivery — some for the first time — to stay in business.

“We are dying, unless we get help somehow,” said Chef Paul Cao, owner of Irvine’s Burnt Crumbs, which has turned to takeout and delivery, along with its sister eatery Burntzilla in Irvine. Both locales were forced to lay off workers. The Huntington Beach Burntzilla is shuttered for now.
“We spent two hours calling each and every employee individually. We apologized to them. We told them we were so very sorry that we failed them as owners,” said Phi Nguyen, Burntzilla chef-owner. “We feel like our employees trust us with their livelihood and give us their all and we just, we really tried. We tried everything, are continuing to try everything … ”
In a first for Marché Moderne, a Newport Beach French bistro run by husband-and-wife chef duo Florent and Amelia Marneau, is a takeout option. Patrons can select from a rotating menu, with gloved servers delivering orders to vehicles. Chef Florent is trying to keep his staff on the payroll — a team of more than 60, some of whom worked there for nearly two decades, a spokesperson said.
For those making meal plans, the following list offers some options for residents looking to support local establishments and their delivery or pick-up options.
Call Brunos at (714) 257-1000 to order the Lasagna Family Meal which includes a Caesar salad, Brunos’ lasagna and tiramisu for $20 per person. Plus, the Italian eatery’s OC Restaurant Week menu, three courses for $30, is extended through March 22. Take-out and delivery options are available through third-party partners for the chain’s “American classic” menu, including Mac N’ Cheese Balls, Fresno Fig Burger and the Bourbon Barrel Cake.
The Huntington Beach location is shuttered until further notice, but the Irvine locale is open for takeout and delivery daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The menu, with such favorites as Spaghetti Grilled Cheese” Reubens and club sandwiches, plus the “Brunch Pop-Up” menu (including soufflé pancakes) is available via third-delivery apps like DoorDash and the ChowNow app.
Takeout is available, including a $40 family-kit meal that serves up to four, and includes 10 sliders and “zillas” (any combo), plus a tray of tater tots. This eatery opened about 11 months ago and now is struggling as it served employees from UCI, which is mostly shuttered. Delivery orders can be placed via third-party delivery apps. Plus, a “family package” — with handmade tortillas, choice of meat for for 12-plus tacos (Carne Asada, Al Pastor, Cochinita Pibil, Pollo Al Pastor, Pollo Asado and Vegan), chips and guacamole, beans, salsa, cebolla and cilantro — is available via Uber Eats and will be later this week through Grubhub , Postmates, and Doordash. Also, Taco Tuesday pricing now is extended to every day with $1 off chicken and pork tacos (from $3.50 to $2.50).

The French bistro is suspending dinner service, but has “Curbside Takeout” from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. The menu will change daily. Phone lines will open as early as 10 a.m. at 714-434-7900. When guests pull up to the restaurant, they can call and a gloved staffer will come out with the packaged food.
